» Buying Guide

Plastic army men are toy soldier figures that became widely popular in the mid-20th century, especially during the 1950s through the 1980s. Originally inspired by metal toy soldiers, they were made from inexpensive molded plastic, making large armies affordable for kids, collectors, and hobbyists.

Most classic army men were molded in green plastic and depict soldiers in combat poses like kneeling, crawling, firing rifles, or throwing grenades. Over time, the hobby expanded into many scales, historical periods, and themes including World War II, Vietnam, medieval battles, cowboys, sci-fi, and fantasy.

The two most common scales are:

  • 1/32 scale, larger figures around 2 inches tall

  • 1/72 scale, smaller figures around 1 inch tall

Major historic brands include Marx Toys, Airfix, and BMC Toys.

The Army Painter Wet Palette For Acrylic Paint

  • At its core, this is a paint management tool.

    It uses:

    • A sponge layer (holds water)

    • A membrane sheet (controls moisture)

    • A sealed tray with lid

Together, this keeps your acrylic paint hydrated and workable for hours instead of minutes

    That one change alone:

    • reduces wasted paint

    • improves blending

    • slows you down in a good wayn text goes here

  • This directly improves your most important step:

    Base coating

    Instead of:

    • thick paint

    • streaky layers

    • rushed brushwork

    You get:

    • smoother coats

    • better control

    • more time per figure

    It also helps with:

    • mixing consistent uniform colors

    • keeping skin tones usable across multiple figures

    • batch painting (huge for army men)

  • Typical contents:

    • 2 hydro foam sponges

    • 50 palette sheets

    • sealed tray + lid

    • built-in brush storage layer

That’s enough to paint dozens of figures before needing refills.

  • 1. Paint stays usable for hours (sometimes longer)
You can step away and come back without starting over

    2. Better paint consistency
The palette naturally thins your paint to smoother layers

    3. Saves money over time
Less wasted paint = fewer bottles replaced

    1. Soak sponge (not dripping, just saturated)

    2. Lay palette paper on top

    3. Add paint

    4. Close lid when not in use

    That’s it. No complexity.
